Marketing Relationships - Follow-up Is Everything

Business owners and independent professionals spend exhaustive hours networking, meeting with prospects and on other marketing activities. What is often missing is any type of follow-up system to develop relationships that will turn into business.

It is always nice and a pleasant surprise when we meet someone who needs our product and service at the very moment of introduction. However, this is rarely the case, and we completely waste our efforts when we do not follow-up and allow people to buy from us when they are ready.

It is essential to develop a system to keep in touch, and there are several methods for doing so. One of those methods is a simple periodic follow-up phone call. This is essential for what you consider to be your prime prospects, and these calls should be done regularly. Another touch point can be e-mailed follow-up. Keep in touch by sending valuable information to your prospects such as articles, local information, and occasionally special offers that you might have on products or services. A third method could be the use of greeting cards with a personal touch. This is an extremely effective way to stay in touch as a very high percentage of these cards are opened by the recipients. It is also a very nice change of pace from the glut of e-mails that we all receive. A fourth and important method is to get together face-to-face with top prospects and networking partners at least once a quarter.

A systematic “keep in touch” system will pay big dividends if done consistently and with a variety of strategies. You will be surprised how many phone calls you’ll receive with business and referrals that will keep your pipeline full.
